Public broadcasting is facing tough times these days, and some say it is due to politics.  That may be true, but regardless of your political leanings, if you have young kids, this affects you.  Freepress.net offers some background on this situation and moveon.org is collecting signatures for a petition to Congress.  Thus far, over 1 million signatures have been collected, so it seems like folks are interested in keeping Big Bird around.
