During a time when we are being constantly reinforced with advertising on the benefits of preschool, now we have information suggesting that pre-K kids are being expelled three times as often as K-12 children. Results are broken down by age and demographics, and indicate that likelihood for expulsion is different depending on the child’s age, gender and race. Also, check out the type of program your child is in because they have different overall rates of expulsion.
The information in this study is really quite scary since the experts are doing a push on preschool these days. And the data suggest that many expulsions could be prevented if schools had more access to behaviorial professionals, which makes me wonder what training the preschool teachers have, and why it does not seem to be adequate. Pre-K schools are already extremely pricey and out of range for many families without adding extra cost layers, so maybe we could give our primary teachers the training they need to deal with more situations instead of calling in the experts every time a problem arises. These are kids we’re dealing with, not little machines.
